Water & Environmental Sanitation and School Improvements
Water supply, sanitation, and health are closely related. Poor hygiene, inadequate quantities, and quality of drinking water and lack of sanitation facilities cause millions of the world’s poorest people to die from preventable diseases each year. Women and children are the main victims
Pakistan Institute for Environment Development Action Research (PIEDAR) is working on WATSAN projects with partnership of Plan- Pakistan since 2005 to carry out water and sanitation and school improvement components in the 52 villages of Dist. Vehari to improve the living style of the targeted communities.
WATSAN Components:
- Promotion of water, sanitation and hygiene education with active participation of communities (software elements)
- Construction of water and sanitation facilities and school rehabilitation with the involvement of local masons and community members (Hardware elements).
Working Area
PIEDAR is working with 52 villages of Vehari and Burewala.
Activities carried out (Software)
- Social Mobilization for WATSAN activities
- Health & Hygiene sessions delivered in 110 Govt. Girls & Boys Schools
- Health & Hygiene sessions delivered in 70 Early Child Care Development centres
- WES information delivered in 41 communities with male, female and children forums.
- Solid Waste Management (SWM) sessions were delivered in 76 communities.
- Safe Drinking Water Management (DWM) sessions were delivered in 10 communities.
- Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) sessions were delivered in four communities.
Activities carried out (Hardware)
- Constructed 850 household latrines in eight villages with the active participation of community and village organization to improve the sanitation condition.
- Constructed the six school latrines block at four Govt. Girls Schools and two Govt. Boys Schools to give the children basic sanitation facility at their schools.
- Laid the two new sewerage schemes in two villages with the participation of community and village organization to improve the sanitation conditions of the villages.
- Rehabilitated three sewerage schemes in three villages with the participation of community and village organizations to improve the sanitation conditions of the villages.
- Rehabilitated three safe drinking water schemes with the participation of community and village organization.
- Constructed six class rooms with veranda at three Govt. Girls schools and three at Govt. Boys Schools to provide the children basic facility in the schools.
- Constructed the four sports field at four Govt. Boys Schools to provide the healthy environment to the children.
WATSAN Team
WATSAN team consists of two female and one male social mobilizers, one Sub- Engineer, one Accounts Officer and a Team Leader. All staff members are qualified and professional. |
